Enhancing Water Efficiency in the Big Wood River Ecosystem

We forged a partnership with the Bypass Canal Users Association to conduct a comprehensive study on water efficiency along the bypass system, spanning from Glendale Bridge to Heart Rock Ranch. Teaming up with ESA, we've implemented state-of-the-art loggers to continuously gather water quantity and quality data throughout the summer. Our ultimate objective is to gain a deeper understanding of water loss and gains within the system, enhancing water efficiency and optimizing flows. This initiative marks a significant step forward as we harness data to inform long-term decisions that positively impact the Big Wood River Ecosystem.

These water level monitoring sensors on each logger measure the pressure of water above the sensor which we will convert to water depth as well as temperature of the water itself. We selected eight locations along the Big Wood River, where water is diverted through canals, thanks to these loggers will be able to quantify how much water will be diverted at each location from the Big Wood River.

Project goals and benefits:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of water dynamics within the bypass system

  • Enhance water efficiency

  • Optimize flows to benefit the Big Wood River Ecosystem.

  •  Positive impact on water efficiency and ecosystem health

  • Informed decision-making based on collected data

  • Potential for driving meaningful change and conservation efforts in the community
