PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Lake Creek 75 Project aims to lessen flood and erosion risks along the Big Wood River, approximately three miles north of Ketchum, near the confluence of Lake Creek. By moving the main river channel away from Highway 75, the project will restore natural bends, reconnect the historic floodplain, improve water quality, and reduce dependence on rock armoring—all while protecting the critical travel route north of Ketchum.

From 2004 to 2015, the river’s 1.2-mile reach near Lake Creek saw dramatic changes, threatening infrastructure and habitat. Ongoing sediment from Lake Creek and downstream channel confinement continue to drive adjustments, making this area highly dynamic.

PROJECT GOALS AND BENEFITS

  • Restore natural flow patterns: Reintroduce sinuosity to enhance aquatic habitat and river processes, a realigned river channel that is more stable, dynamic, and resilient over time

  • Reduce flood risks: Protect communities and infrastructure, including State Highway 75, from erosion and flood damage

  • Improve water quality: Establish a vegetative buffer along the highway corridor to filter runoff and reduce impacts from traffic and magnesium chloride

  • Reconnect the historic floodplain: Reverse channel incision to restore groundwater exchange, habitat diversity, and floodplain function

  • Enhance aquatic and riparian habitat: supporting fish, wildlife, and natural vegetation

PARTNERS
